The day after attending a very informative workshop given by the Epilepsy Foundation of New Jersey, a third grade student with a diagnosis of epilepsy came to my office. She was bleeding from her chin after falling in the bathroom and did not remember what happened. This student was being referred by her teacher to the child study team because her grades had fallen dramatically and she was not focusing in class. The teacher described her as "zoning out" and not paying attention or following directions. Seizures were never considered because she had only two in her lifetime. Because of the extensive coverage during the workshop on many different types of seizures, I realized that the fall in the bathroom and the falling grades were both attributed to absence seizures that were being mistakenly identified in the classroom as a learning disability or a behavior problem. The student was immediately evaluated by her neurologist and put on medication. Both her grades and her behavior in class have improved significantly. Recently, the people from EFNJ came to my school to inservice the staff and parents on seizures. The staff now feels more comfortable dealing with students who have seizures in our school.

In the face of great uncertainty, the Epilepsy Foundation of New Jersey provided a means for me and my family to have a voice. Helping others is sometimes the greatest gift one could experience. It is through that help we realized we are not alone and when banded together, a force to be reckoned with.
